We scan your teeth with an iTero wand. It is a camera on a stick, it takes a few minutes, and it replaces the tray of impression putty that used to be the worst part of the appointment. The scan becomes a three-dimensional model, and the plan is built on that.

You can see the intended finish before you commit to anything, which also means you can see when the answer is that aligners are not the right tool for your particular bite.

What wearing them is actually like

• They are worn about 22 hours a day. Out for meals, out to brush, in the rest of the time. The result follows the hours, and this is the single thing that decides whether treatment works.
• Each new aligner feels tight for a day or so. That tightness is the tooth moving.
• Small tooth-colored attachments are often bonded to some teeth to give the aligner something to push against. They come off at the end.
• Afterward, you wear a retainer. Teeth drift back otherwise, and the retainer is not optional if you want to keep the result.

Most of the adults who ask about it want a specific thing fixed: crowding at the front, a tooth that has drifted, or a bite that has shifted since the braces they had at fourteen. For teenagers the appeal is usually that they can be taken out for a game or for a photograph.
